Toffia is a small and charming medieval hilltop village in the middle of Sabina, about 40km NE of Rome. For most of the year the population is less than 1000 but in August, a music festival transforms the otherwise tranquil, almost sleepy Toffia into a giant stage crowded with actors, musicians, street artists and artisans. The festival is called ‘Folk in Progress’ and many different groups perform their own interpretations of tradition Italian folk music. Despite the close proximity to Rome, Sabina is a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The countryside is a patchwork of olive groves and vineyards, dotted with ancient castles, monasteries and villages that haven’t changed for centuries.
